SenatorSobelState Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood) received the AFL-CIO Leadership Award for her legislative service on behalf of working men and women. Broward County AFL-CIO President Dan Reynolds awarded Sobel during the organization’s annual Labor Day event hosted at the Hollywood Westin Diplomat Hotel. The AFL-CIO bestows this award on legislators who exhibit strong support of economic and political justice for the Florida workers who keep this state running daily.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award,” Senator Sobel said. “Truly, this award belongs to the working men and women of Florida who remain dedicated to their jobs despite budget cuts, stagnant wages and statewide furloughs.”

During the event, Senator Sobel told of the role unions have played in the lives of multiple generations in her family.

“Union membership runs deep in my family. My husband, Stuart, before he went to medical school, was a hotel union worker. My mother was a member of AFSCME in New York City. My brother is a member of the musician’s union. My mother-in-law was a member of United Federation of Teachers and so was I.”
