Like so many good ideas, Muzart Kidz Konnection in Downtown Hollywood was inspired by the personal experiences of its owner and executive director, Tina Buccellato, who found the traditional arts enrichment offerings for young children and their moms to be wanting.

After her daughter Savannah was born in 2001, Buccellato enrolled in the typical Mommy & Me classes and discovered that there were no art programs available for little ones.

“So I started an art program, and it spiraled into Muzart,” she said.

With a background in television, radio and music, Buccellato combined her professional experience with her experience as a mom to develop a full-service enrichment center that introduces the entire family to the world of art, music, physical education and much more.

She launched her business in Aventura in early 2002 and relocated four years ago to 1205 S. 21st Ave. The recently renovated facility offers 5,000 square feet of instructional space on two floors and a 1,000 square-foot patio and playground area. Amenities include a state-of-the-art gym, an enlarged party room, a new computer bar where parents can keep busy while waiting for their children, and a learning room where parents and siblings can do homework.

Each week, Muzart Kidz Konnection serves 150 students of all ages from Hollywood and surrounding areas. Children’s programs include music, art, drama, cooking, camp and movement classes that range from dance and gymnastics to Pilates and martial arts. Muzart also is a licensed provider of Music Together, an internationally recognized early-childhood music program for ages up to 5 years and their parents.

Muzart is now offering hands-on kids’ computer classes on Wednesday afternoons. A laptop will be provided to each child for learning everything from Windows basics to graphic design, animation and multimedia presentations. Classes, which are limited to 12 students, are held at 4:30 p.m. (ages 4 to 6) and 5:15 p.m. (ages 7 to 10).

Adult programs at Muzart include Pilates and classes in experimental painting, portrait drawing and painting, and still life drawing. Private lessons for all ages in art, piano and guitar also are available.

Buccellato prides herself on her staff of a half-dozen instructors. “I’m very picky about my teachers. I hand-pick everybody,” she said. “It’s like a family here.”

In addition to its arts enrichment programs, Muzart offers a drop-off childcare program and Parents Night Out, which provides grown-ups with a “date night” while their children enjoy dinner, movies and activities.

Buccellato said canvas parties – semi-instructional happy hours on the patio with a revolving art instructor and jazz music – are a big hit with parents, who come for a much-needed break and “end up being really surprised at what they created.” The next canvas party is scheduled for 6 to 9:30 p.m. Fri., Nov. 14. The cost is $35, which includes a large canvas, art supplies and light refreshments. Childcare is available for an additional cost.

Among the other special events at Muzart are father-daughter dances and classes in nutrition, self-defense and CPR, as well as specialty birthday parties with music, art/cooking or gym themes in the huge new party room.

“We have the most customized parties ever,” said Buccellato.
