State Representative Marty Kiar, who ran unopposed for District 97, donated a portion of his remaining campaign funds to The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood to assist with its capital campaign for the first Holocaust Museum in North America.
The Center’s primary mission is to preserve, protect and perpetuate the authentic memory of the Holocaust by creating a permanent and irrefutable record of the testimonies of survivors, liberators and rescuers. And the new Holocaust Museum will be the first to teach the lessons of the Holocaust in both English and Spanish.
“I had no idea that we had an educational facility like this and a soon to be museum in our area,” Kiar said after visiting the Center for the first time. “I was thrilled to come and visit it.”
After touring the Center, speaking with the survivors and volunteers, viewing one of only nine rail cars in the world used in the Holocaust, and perusing the oral history of the Holocaust, Kiar decided to donate his campaign funds to the cause.
“The Center does such amazing work with testimonials,” he said. “I believe it is so important to educate people in our state and country about the atrocities of the Holocaust so that those types of things never happen again.”
Although family details are sketchy, Kiar noted that he himself had lost family to the Holocaust on his paternal side of the family.
