As a wife, mother of three and business traveler who logs more than 150,000 miles per year, Hollywood resident Veronica Tomor found her fast-paced life catching up with her waist line. In an attempt to live a healthier lifestyle while on the go, Tomor began researching ways to keep the weight off while traveling, all of which can be found in her new book.
In “The L.E.A.N. (Living Educated About Nutrition) Guide for the Business Traveler,” Tomor guides readers through smarter food choices at airports, hotels and restaurants and ways to keep them motivated to exercise while traveling. She incorporates the most realistic practices she learned, including those that come from her friends and people she interviewed in airports, hotels and other locations during her travels.
“We all live life on the go,” Tomor said. “So, my concepts are about understanding proper food choices. If you know how to eat smart, you can eat well anywhere you go.”
As a health care professional, Tomor has worked in hospitals, health plans and the pharmaceutical industry. She spoke to Congressmen and Senators at Capitol Hill regarding the diabetes and obesity epidemic in the U.S. for three years in a row (2007-2009) and has also contributed to Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move open forum to the public by providing input into the areas of deficit regarding physical fitness and nutrition and youth. She used this background to help promote healthy food choices in her book as well.
And while her book focuses on business travelers, Tomor said it applies to any traveler. With vacation season upon the families of Hollywood, Tomor suggests packing healthy snacks like nuts, almonds and protein bars instead of opting for overpriced, unhealthy airport terminal food; avoiding buffets and consuming too much alcohol, which contains empty calories and carbohydrates; exercising; and never skipping any meals.
To keep her work in the health industry going, Tomor also would like to focus on preventing childhood obesity and offering ways for parents to communicate about healthy living habits in the future.
“What we do as parents teaches our children,” she said. “If you don’t teach them the right concepts at an early age, they will have a harder time picking them up later on. I think there needs to be more communication among parents to help keep their families healthy.”
Tomor said she would love for Hollywood residents to spend more time outdoors and exercising because exercise is great for not only your body but also your mind.
“Hollywood is so conducive to being outdoors, so we need to take advantage of that.”
