Torch Run for the Special Olympics set for May 1

The Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics will make its way through Hollywood on May 1st

The run will begin at 8:30 a.m. at County Line Road and A1A and travel north on A1A to the Palm Beach County line.  Hollywood Police officers will pick up the torch at A1A and Hallandale Beach Boulevard and carry the torch until they hand it off at Sheridan Street. Some Hollywood officers will continue on to Dania Beach Boulevard. Hollywood has been participating for at least eight years. So far 12 officers have confirmed they will run in the event and more are expected to participate, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood.

A Hollywood Police officer who participated last year said, “It is empowering to know that we have made a real difference in the lives of Special Olympic athletes. It is a great organization and it feels great to support them and show that we care.”

The officer continued, “I really felt proud to have participated. I wish I had all the money in the world to give to the Special Olympics.”

The slow paced run keeps everyone together so they can experience being a part of the event.

The Hollywood Police Department has a limited supply of “Torch Run” T-shirts and hats available for purchase. All the money from the sale of these items goes to the Special Olympics. People can also make a donation. People can also line up along AIA at 8:30 a.m. to cheer on the officers. For more information, call Sgt. Cheri Stetkar at 954 967 4370.
