South Florida Wildlife Center rescues unruly 'students' from Sunshine Elementary Charter School

Monday morning at Sunshine Elementary Charter School students arrived to discover two new faces who didn’t quite fit in with the other 400 students.

Two very young raccoons, only weeks old, were frantically running around the school campus looking for their mother—who apparently had been killed somewhere.

“They were hungry and scared and were approaching all of us,” said Assistant Jane Principal Miskell.  “I am sure you can imagine how difficult it was to keep 400+ students away.”

So Miskell reached out to the South Florida Wildlife Center and a team arrived by the afternoon to assist.

“I want to publicly acknowledge the wonderful work that the South Florida Wildlife Center team does,” said Miskell after they rescued the baby racoons. “They were handled so well and we are thrilled the raccoons will be cared for and released into the wild rather than euthanized.”

Sherry L. Schlueter, Executive Director, South Florida Wildlife Center was equally grateful for the experience. “What a splendid way to teach compassion and the importance of helping our wild neighbors,” she said. “Many thanks for caring about wildlife, and for setting such a wonderful example for your many students to follow.”

South Florida Wildlife Center’s mission is to protect wildlife through rescue, rehabilitation, and education. They serve the tri-county area of Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.

If you have found injured or orphaned wildlife in South Florida, call 954-524-4302 or 866-SOS-WILD.
