South Broward polo teams set world record for longest water polo game

Members of the South Broward High School boys and girls water polo team played a boys versus girls water polo game for 28 hours and 37 minutes at the South Broward pool setting a world record for the longest water polo game on March 19, 2016. The previous record was 24 hours.

The team wanted to play for 36 hours but the game was stopped because of lightning. Head Coach Chris Bloese said they won’t play a marathon game like this again. In the end, all the players were excited to have broken the world record, but exhausted.

The game was played in the South Broward pool and  included 31 players. The players were required to rest during the event.

“We played this game because we wanted to raise awareness about high school water polo. This sport does not get as much recognition as other sports do. And we also wanted to raise money,” said Chris Bloese, head water polo coach at South Broward.

Courtney Cook, co-captain of the girls’ team was pleased to be a part of the game. “This game was exhausting and exciting,” she said.

Racquel Jimenez, co-captain of the girls’ team said, “I enjoyed playing in this game. It was a learning experience,” she said.

Romario DeFour, captain of the boys’ team said he enjoyed being a part of this game. “It was a good experience for the team,” he said.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have winning records. Bloese will submit documentation on the game to the Guinness Book of World Records.
