McArthur Mustangs finish season at 11-1

The McArthur High School football team finished its regular season with a 10-0 record, winning a district championship and flirting with advancing further in the regional playoffs.

The Mustangs grabbed win No. 11 in a 34-17 victory over Miami Doral Academy in the Region 4-7A quarterfinal, but a last-seconds touchdown in the semifinal ended the team’s season, as the Mustangs fell to Miami Mater Academy, 14-13, at Milander Stadium.

Still, many players have seen success as part of the team’s efforts this year.

Dominick Watt, a top player for the Mustangs, has done well at free safety and wide receiver. He has 14 college football scholarship offers, from Alabama, Louisville, Kentucky, Temple, among others.

“Watt is a great athlete,” Coach Laron Culpepper said.

Other top players include Steven Evans Jr., who plays cornerback and as of the end of the regular season led Broward County with seven interceptions, having returned two for touchdowns. Craig Cooper, a running back, had about 1,000 yards rushing, while Jaquan Denson had 700 yards in receiving.

Defensive Tackle Hansky Paillant is another leading defensive player, logging 11 sacks this season. Dantae Banton plays defensive end and had 10 sacks.
