Hollywood Commission passes resolution to discourage smoking in open spaces through signs

Members of the Hollywood Commission and some in the public would rather people not smoke at the beach or in public parks. But under state law, the Commission cannot actually prohibit people from smoking in these areas.

The Commission can, however, place signs in areas where city leaders don’t want smoking to occur. During a recent meeting, the Commission saw a presentation on various signs that could be placed in open spaces to discourage smoking. The signs included statements such as, “Young Lungs at Play. Thank You for Not Smoking.” Other signs read, “Please Enjoy Fresh Air” or “Thank You for Not Smoking.”

The Commission passed a resolution supporting a no-smoking in open spaces policy, which includes parks, sports fields, conservation sites and beaches, through the encouragement of signage.
