The Apollo Middle School SECME Team won the Broward County SECME-STEM Olympiad for the middle school division at Blanche Ely High School. The team received first and second place in the mouse trap car competition.

The sixth-grade girls mouse trap car team won first place. “They won because they were so focused,” said Diana Dworzan, a science teacher for gifted students and the SECME coach at Apollo Middle School. “They wanted to keep making it better and rebuilt it twice. They worked very hard on it.”

The Apollo SECME team placed in every event. Other areas they competed in were building and launching bottle rockets, developing a generator and writing essays. “We hold meetings before and after school. We take the criteria we are given, examine them and make a decision on how to design something,” Dworzan said.

The students complete blueprints and then build the mouse trap cars, generators and bottle rockets.

The Apollo students will go to Tuscaloosa, AL, at the end of June to participate in the national mouse trap car competition.
