Hollywood to ban Styrofoam at beaches and parks

Single-use Styrofoam products take a toll on the environment and a very long time to decompose.

During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission passed an ordinance on first reading to prohibit the use of Styrofoam on public property at Hollywood’s beaches and parks.

This new ordinance doesn’t apply to restaurants, although one prohibiting disposable food service products has reportedly been on Hollywood’s books since 1996. It doesn’t seem to be enforced.

Violators will be faced with fines of up to $500 or up to 60 days in jail.  There will be final reading on the ordinance at an upcoming meeting.
