Port Everglades Receives $2.25 Million In Grant Money

Broward County’s Port Everglades will receive more than $2.25 million in U.S. port security grants to advance firefighting capabilities and enhance the seaport’s security infrastructure.

The money will mean more advanced foam equipment to be used by Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue, which provides fire protection at the Port. It will provide for the purchase of drones for protecting the Port. And it will allow for the repair of security gates and upgrades to infrastructure at the Port.

The FY 2018 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) awards were announced on Friday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program was funded at $100 million, and more than 36 ports received direct grants.

“We want to thank the DHS and FEMA for recognizing that Port Everglades has unique security needs due to our diverse business model that includes cruise, cargo, and petroleum. Each of these business segments has specific security and safety requirements,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak.
