Beachside Montessori Art Club Teams Up with Humane Society to Encourage Adult Cat Adoptions

Each week the art club at Beachside Montessori Village School in Hollywood meets to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. The projects have an educational message and past projects have included: ceramics, bicycle wheel frames woven with marine debris, sculptures from materials such as Styrofoam and cardboard that would have been discarded at school, and currently they are working on creating peace signs that will include messages about why they are grateful for the environment and ocean.

In November the kids, who range in age from third to eighth grade, learned how adult cats are often overlooked at animal shelters and have a harder time finding permanent loving homes. Photos of felines who have been at the Humane Society of Broward County for more than 30 days were printed out and given to each student. The students then painted miniature portraits (3×3) of the feline in need.

The masterpieces are on display at the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road in the lobby. According to Cherie Wachter, VP of Marketing at the HSBC – “this is a very creative way to help bring awareness to the many cats that are waiting for forever homes. Hopefully, the art club students are more aware of the need for cat adopters and if their family is looking to add a feline friend, they will consider adopting.”

“Whether it be about the environment, helping others in need in our community or bringing awareness, the 52 students let their creativity shine each month,” said Manon Boulanger Wiese, art club volunteer.

The HSBC is conveniently located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95.  Adoption hours are Monday – Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. For more information 954-989-3977.
