City Partners with Youth Volunteers on Hollywood Beach Dune Restoration Project April 27

The City of Hollywood is partnering with the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) to rehabilitate the sand dune at Eucalyptus Terrace on Hollywood Beach. YEA will lead more than 75 employees and volunteers from Wells Fargo for their “Day of Service” project, in honor of Earth Day, on Saturday, April 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The City was awarded $5,000 from Broward County’s Coastal Dune Restoration Grant Program for the restoration of this degraded dune. As part of the overall restoration project, crews have already removed non-native plants and other woody species. Volunteers will now fill in the open spaces by planting close to 5,000 sea oats, grasses, and other low-growing native species in an effort to restore the dune.

Dune restoration projects have been taking place along Hollywood Beach for many years now. Contractors and volunteers have removed exotic species, replanted native vegetation, and conducted select pruning in an effort to restore the dunes to full health. Signage has also been added on the beach to help educate the public on the importance of coastal dunes. Dunes help protect inland areas from storm damage, prevent erosion, retain sand, preserve threatened plant species, and provide a vibrant habitat for wildlife. In addition to general maintenance, future restoration projects are planned at multiple dunes along Hollywood Beach as part of the City’s overall Dune Master Plan Process.
