The South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) is launching SoFIA Fellows, a new program that will harness the power of an older workforce to help nonprofit organizations of South Florida achieve their missions while also providing older adults with an expanded social network, an increased sense of purpose, and updated workforce skills.
“For some older adults, retirement isn’t the answer while others may not be in a position to retire or even be able to find a job due to age discrimination,” said Peter Kaldes, President and CEO of the South Florida Institute on Aging. “Through SoFIA Fellows, they can continue to make a contribution to our community, ensure important civic engagement and sharpen workforce skills that contribute to economic security.”
Sponsored by a generous grant from The Frederick A. Deluca Foundation Inc., the innovative program offers a 10-week training session followed by placement in an unpaid internship with area non-profits. SOFIA Fellows will enjoy ongoing networking opportunities and inclusion in an alumni job bank.

“Being more isolated and going through your days without mental stimulation and a sense of purpose impacts well-being. Many adults also find they need to remain in the workforce due to the fact that we are living longer and the rising cost of living will continue to rise. By partnering with other non-profits, SoFIA Fellows is a win-win for older adults and the community.”
Instructors and community leaders will provide training on the fundamentals of nonprofits such as fundraising, board development and human resources as well as contemporary approaches to leadership, management and intergenerational workplaces.
During their internships, SoFIA Fellows will become part of a nonprofit’s team advancing the mission of organizations that help children, the environment, people with special needs, the homeless seniors and more.
“I know firsthand what it’s like trying to hide my age on my resume to get a job,” said Rhonda Banker, SoFIA Fellows Program Manager. “I’m excited to be leading a practical program where we don’t have to hide our ages, inspires us to thrive in the workplace and encourages generational diversity.”
The inaugural semester begins October 8 and is limited to 15 participants. There is an application fee of $50 and a one-time enrollment fee of $250.
