Hollywood Hoagies Satisfies Deli Demand in Downtown Hollywood

South Florida restaurateur Bob Haupert waited years for a certain property in Downtown Hollywood to become available. Given the success of his latest venture, Hollywood Hoagies, it was well worth the wait.

“On day one I expected maybe 15 people would come,” said Haupert, who opened Hollywood Hoagies on July 15. “I came out of the kitchen and the line was out the door. And it never stopped.”

Haupert, a Downtown Hollywood resident for more than 30 years, had long had his eye on the property at 1920 Tyler St., behind Bank of America, when he happened to drive by the site one day.

“I saw a ‘for rent’ sign being installed in the window, and I turned around and came back,” he recalled. “I knew it would be a good spot, and it is.”

In addition to being “the only guy on Tyler Street with a restaurant” in an area full of offices, Haupert cited major development projects in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district as a benefit to his business.

But it’s the “good service, good food, good price” that keeps customers coming back, he said.

Hollywood Hoagies promises “More than just the best hoagies,” and it delivers on that promise.

Besides the variety of cold and hot and hoagies from the Original Italian to sausage and peppers, the extensive menu features overstuffed New York deli-style sandwiches (corned beef, pastrami, turkey breast, brisket), as well as po’ boy sandwiches (fried oyster, shrimp, catfish, soft-shell crab), Philly cheese steaks, Cuban specialties, wraps, empanadas, salads, soups and daily specials. Meats are roasted fresh daily in-house. You can even order a 6-foot party sub.

Hollywood Hoagies also serves breakfast, including omelets, bagels with a variety of spreads, a Nova platter, prosciutto and egg on an English muffin, a $5 breakfast combo (egg, ham and cheese on a Kaiser roll and a large coffee or tea) and more. Other Hollywood Hoagies offerings are Cuban pastries, Dr. Brown’s soda, Cuban coffee, and hot and cold specialty coffee drinks.

Haupert, who was the district manager for the Food Emporium, a gourmet supermarket chain in his native New York, also owns a Starbucks and a sub shop in the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, and a deli in Turnberry.

But the new business in his Downtown Hollywood neighborhood holds a special place in Haupert’s heart.

“I love being here. It’s not work to me,” he said. “I love my customers. I have the best customers here in Hollywood.”

Hollywood Hoagies opens at 8 am daily except Sunday and closes at 5 pm Monday – Friday and 4 pm on Saturday. Delivery, takeout service and online ordering at Toasttab.com are available.
