Hollywood Commission purchases

Here are the major purchases agreed to by the Hollywood City Commission this week.

  • The Department of Fire Rescue and Beach Safety approved purchase orders to Duval Ford and Coggin Ford for the purchase of vehicles in a total amount of $229,667.
  • The Commission approved a $100,000 port fee agreement with Motorola Solutions for the connection to Motorola Solutions South Florida hosted master site 800 Mhz Radio System for Public Safety local government use, as well as communication with other entities including Broward County.
  • The Commission approved a purchase order with Thompson Pump and Manufacturing Co. for the purchase of trailer mounted high efficiency, low pressure pumps for an estimated amount of $110,000.
  • The Commission approved a work order with AECOM Technical Services to provide professional engineering services for design and construction services related to Lift Station E-14’s rehabilitation and replacement located at 1480 Three Island Boulevard in an amount not to exceed $99,958. The Commission approved a work order with Craven Thompson and Associates to provide professional engineering services for design and construction services related to the sanitary sewer system isolation valve and flowmeter at Park Road and Taft Street in amount not to exceed $69,532.
  • The Commission agreed to a resolution allowing city leaders to issue a purchase order to Garber Chrysler Dodge Truck for the purchase of 21 new 2020 Dodge Charger SXT RWD vehicles in an amount not to exceed $553,455.
  • The Commission agreed to a purchase to Garber Ford for three new 2020 Ford Intercept Utility Hybrid AWD vehicles in an amount not to exceed $121,479. It agreed to purchase to Alan Jay Fleet Sales for two new 2020 Ford 5-150 Police Responder 4WD Supercrew trucks in amount not to exceed $83,895.

Hollywood Commission considers ordinance banning single use plastic items

The Hollywood Commission is considering prohibiting the use of single use plastic food service products by city vendors on public property across the entire city.

Currently, the city has a plastic and foam free ordinance for establishments located east of the Intracoastal Waterway selling food intended for consumption off premises.

Food packaging included in the ban are:

  • cups
  • lids
  • straws
  • plates
  • bowels
  • utensils
  • sandwich containers
  • and other packaging made of plastic, polystyrene plastic, or other non-biodegradable materials.

The move to ban plastics comes after various studies have found that disposable plastic items are harming the environment, including many forms of ocean life.

There are large areas of the ocean that have been polluted by disposable plastic items, and a large amount of disposable plastic items have been collected along the beach. Many of these items, if not picked up, will end up in the ocean.

The final reading on this ordinance will be at an upcoming commission meeting.

Stand up paddle boarders will have fewer restrictions off Hollywood’s beach

The Hollywood Commission passed an ordinance on first reading to allow stand up paddle boarders to operate anywhere off the beach before 10:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.

The stand up paddle boarders must be 100 yards off the beach, between Liberty Street and Madison Street.

Stand up paddle boarding is a popular sport and one that many Hollywood residents enjoy. Those who participate in this activity have asked for fewer restrictions and have said that stand up paddle boarding poses few risks to people swimming at the beach.
