Broward Chooses Not to Arm Teachers; Reallocates Funding for More School Resource Officers

The education community nationwide is rejecting efforts to arm teachers in classrooms as a solution to gun violence prevalent today in schools across the country. Following the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School, Florida legislature passed a bill (SB 7026) which would allow school employees, including some teachers, to bring guns to school if they are specially trained and deputized by sheriffs.  The legislation allows school districts to decide whether or not to participate in the program. The so-called Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program was named in honor of the MSD football coach who died shielding students from...

Residents Continue to Voice Concerns About Orangebrook Golf Course and Other City Green Spaces

At the recent Charter Review Meeting at City Hall, much of the discussion once again centered on protecting the green space at Orangebrook Golf Course. Many of the people who spoke during the meeting said they were concerned about developers converting the land into home developments or other uses. Many of the speakers wanted the property to remain a 36 hole golf course, while some suggested it might be good to develop half the property and leave an 18 hole course. A few people said that development of the land occupied by Orangebrook should be available for development because new development would be good for the City of Hollywood. The arguments were nothing new, reiterating the underlying concern that if developers can gain access to the land, Hollywood could lose a major area of green space. The portion of the charter being discussed is about all the green spaces, not just Orangebrook, which is deed restricted. There is talk of adding a hotel to the property, but according to the deed, it is designated as recreational, and a golf course, and any major changes would require a referendum and a vote put to the residents of the...

Hollywood Cops Served in a Different Way at Tip-A-Cop Event to Support Special Olympics

It was fun to watch the uniformed officers from the Hollywood Police Department work as celebrity servers at Hollywood’s Longhorn Steakhouse on Sheridan Street to raise money for the Special Olympics as part of the Tip-A-Cop program on March 20. Lt. Thea Basler led the effort and was pleased with the outcome. Chief Chris O’Brien was among the waiters. This is the third year that Hollywood Police has partnered with Longhorn Steakhouse to raise money for Special Olympics Florida and 100% of the tips collected for the Tip-A-Cop event go directly to benefit this organization. Tip-A-Cop is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run® campaign in support of Special Olympics. Officers also participate in the Torch Run.  As the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics, funds raised in the campaign go directly to local programs where the funds are generated. The Future of Hollywood Looks Even Brighter as City Approves New LED Lighting Plan

Hollywood residents will be seeing more clearly on city streets as the City has approved a new LED street-lighting program presented by FP&L.  During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission received a presentation from the Department of Public Works and Florida Power & Light on the LED street light conversion. The plan will convert 5,788 street lights to LED. Hollywood will be the largest municipality served by FP&L to participate in a conversion. A Tariff was recently approved by the Public Service Commission for the installation of FPL-owned Light-Emitting Diode (LED) street lights in cities and municipalities with no upfront expense to Hollywood.  Phase I of the Tariff allows for the conversion of High-Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lights, owned and maintained by FPL under current SL-1 Lighting Tariff, into the LED Streetlights. Phase II of this Tariff would explore the conversion of HPSV lights owned and maintained by City.  Fixture selection determines monthly charges. There is a reduced FPL maintenance expense and reduced energy expense which would mean an annual savings of approximately $13,000 for the City. Some of the benefits include high efficiency improved lighting levels, improved lighting quality and increased energy savings. There will be a reduction of the carbon footprint and more reliability. The lights should last longer and decrease maintenance expense. There should also be a reduction of light pollution and a reduction in crime. It...
