Hollywood High Student Rona Silber is a Holiday Happiness Helper

Hollywood Hills High School student Rona Silber wanted to do something special this holiday season for kids who were struggling with HIV and AIDS. So she started a group called Kidz 4 A Cure and became the volunteer coordinator, and led an effort to collect children’s toys. At an event that came to be known as the Gift Wrapping Party, a group of students each picked a gift for a specific child, wrapped it, made holiday cards and wrote notes to the children. “I love helping these children,” said Rona. Silber is also on the Executive Board for the Hollywood Hills High...

Cruising Through Port Everglades in 2018? Expect Less Boredom at Boarding

If you’re one of the nearly 4 million passengers expected to pass through Port Everglades this year, expect to be impressed. “Latinos in Action” Truly In Action at Hollywood Hills High

Some of the students at Hollywood Hills High School who participate in the Latinos in Action program actually were born in other countries and came here not even speaking English.  Others were the first American born children in their families.  Whatever their backgrounds, being members of this club of makes them feel more powerful, and they, in turn, want to pass that empowerment onto other Latinos in their schools. “We want to empower Latin young people and create a community,” said Alexandra Ramos, who teaches two classes for Latinos in Action students at Hollywood Hills High.  “The students are...

Hollywood Has a H.A.R.T. for Homeless Dogs

A group of Hollywood residents are in the beginning stages of creating an organization known as the Hollywood Animal Rescue Team (H.A.R.T.).  According to Donna O’Keefe, a volunteer with the H.A.R.T., the goal of the new group is to save the many dogs that are picked up off the streets and prevent thousands of dogs from being euthanized. In addition, the organization hopes to build a shelter, possibly at Stan Goldman Memorial Park, which is located at 800 Knights Road in Park East and already includes the “Hollywood” dog park. It would provide shelter for dogs that are found...

Residents Meet with Community Development Advisory Board.

Hollywood residents and community leaders had an opportunity to discuss concerns they have with members of the Community Development Advisory Board on January 10.  A major problem discussed is the fact that almost half of Hollywood homeowners and about more than half of the city’s renters are considered cost burdened. This means a significant amount of their household income goes toward paying for rent and mortgage. A major problem is that the cost of housing is high and the wages paid by many jobs in the area are fairly low. Cliff Germano, a member of the Board and a community leader explained that this is a major concern for the city, causing many residents of Hollywood have difficulty paying for basic items such as food.  In addition, many of the homes in Hollywood are older and some are in need of repair. Also, a number of community leaders made presentations on the importance of supporting tutoring programs and life skills and career training programs. The 11 member Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB) provides recommendations to the City Commission on matters pertaining to federal and state community development grant funds. Its primary responsibility is to review and evaluate all funding requests under the Community Development Block Grant and other grant funds to assist in creating the City’s Five Year Consolidated Plan and One Year Action...
