Krakatoa—Indonesian: “A Circus in your Mouth!”

Krakatoa co-owner John Anthony moved from Virginia to South Florida some twenty-two years ago (settling in Miami). Four-years ago John ventured to Indonesia and that’s where he met his eventual business partner Abe Muis. “I had arranged my accommodations in advance and Abe was to be one of my hosts. We hit it off. It was like two old friends re-connecting after years apart—kismet. “Abe was situated in Bali where street food was everywhere. What was so amazing was that each cart had a specialty item—something so scrumptious that people would come just for that particular item. That phenomenon...

Meetup with Artist Troy Giorgio

I first met Troy Giorgio at Doris White’s Art N Form Gallery (120 S. 20th Avenue). Troy had just been handed the gauntlet of the Hollywood Art Meetup Group from artist and major mensch Carlos Cotera (L/Mercado Studio Collective 2000 Harrison Street). Troy brings a lot of New York know-how to the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood’s art scene. He and his wife Allison moved to SoFlo in 1991 (settling in Boca for 25-years before moving to Hollywood about a year ago). But let’s go back to Hofstra University (Long Island, New York) where Troy (a budding artist) headed up the...

Bobby, the Beach and Nicks…

On the first day of the October chill I was seated stool-side at Nicks Bar & Grill on the Broadwalk (Hollywood Beach) with co-owner Bobby Ferro. I was shoveling down a bowl of Bobby’s homemade Italian Wedding soup; he was seated beside me with a cigar in his hand. Bobby and his brother Carl moved to Hollywood from Boston in 1980. “We use to vacation here at the beach. We finally decided to make the move.” It just so happens that the brother’s took an apartment next-door to Nicks which happened to be owned by Nick Delfino (owner of...

Meet Hollywood's Dolores Kirby: One Awesome Octogenarian

Eighty-six year old Dolores Kirby is every bit the wide-eyed, precocious, seductress she was 71-years ago when she won her first beauty contest at the age of fifteen. Born in Chicago in 1930, Dolores moved to Hollywood in 1956. “I married Don, my first husband in Chicago and it was he who suggested we make the move to Florida.” The path that led Dolores to the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood, however, reads like vintage pulp fiction—lots of passion, sex, and celebrity—with big cities serving as the backdrop. Despite that first foray into the modeling milieu, once she graduated high-school,...

The Wee-World of Alex Meiklejohn

Alex Meiklejohn is an artist. Alex was also homeless and living at HACK (a Fort Lauderdale shelter) until last year when his case worker hooked him up with permanent housing. “I actually won the homeless lottery,” cracked Alex over coffee at AT3. “There was a literal lottery for living spaces and I won the last one!” Alex’s spiral into homelessness started in 2011 when the graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology (where he studied Ceramics in the 1970’s) was traveling from Rochester to Buffalo for one of his many art exhibitions. His car was rear-ended and he was...
